The Organisation
The Henry Smith Charity was established in 1628 by Henry Smith, a businessman working in the City of London who left land and money for the relief of the poor. Since then, the Charity has honoured the spirit of Henry Smith’s will, working to combat disadvantage and meet the challenges and opportunities facing people in need throughout the UK.

Nearly four centuries after they were first established, The Henry Smith Charity is one of the largest independent grant-making charities in the UK.

The Roles
Due to forthcoming retirements The Henry Smith Charity are looking to recruit two trustees with expertise in the following areas:

Commercial Property Investments: They specifically need a trustee with expertise in commercial property investments who would serve on the Property Sub-Committee and the Investment Committee. The property holdings are a mix of agricultural and commercial and currently represent 20% of the Charity's investment portfolio.

Kindred: They would like a trustee to serve on the Kindred Committee which makes grants to individuals in need who are descendants of Henry Smith. Experience and understanding of the issues faced by individuals experiencing poverty or other disadvantage is essential.

In addition to the specific areas of experience the Charity are seeking individuals who have the capability of contributing constructively to a Board and can show:

  • An understanding of the issues faced by management teams in small frontline charities.
  • An ability to work well as part of a diverse team of trustees and in support of the Executive Team and a willingness occasionally to represent us to prospective grantee organisations
  • Excellent communication skills with an instinct to listen first, the confidence to challenge supportively and the interpersonal skills to build consensus
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities of trustees and clarity on the difference between governance functions and management functions
  • A passion for and commitment to Henry Smith’s vision, mission and values

The Charity are seeking to diversify the Board and would welcome applicants from the North of the England or any of the other countries in the UK. They would also welcome applicants with direct experience of any of the issues they are working to address as well as applicants from BAME communities.
