The Organisation:

Our client is an established building services practice with over 30 years of MEP Consultancy, specialising in Healthcare, Defence, Residential Care and Commercial projects. We provide building services consultancy, low carbon design and energy advisory services.

The consultancy employs and develops Mechancial and Electrical building services engineers, supported by our Computer Aided Design team. Our offices based in Croydon and London Bridge allow easy access to national train networks. We operate predominantly in the south of England, also working with international companies on national level projects.

We have a small, well integrated team, with loyal employees we have invested in as individuals. When times are tough, we look out for each other and the business. We enjoy a positive, family based culture, mixing celebrating our successes together with supporting local communities.

The shares of the business (100%) are being transferred into a trust for the benefit of the employees of the company in September 2025.

The Role:
The Independent Trustee and Chair will have responsibility as a member of the Employee Ownership Trust Board to protect the interests of the beneficiaries in the business.  An Independent Trustee is sought with the willingness and commitment to support the initial establishment and development of the Trust Board, preparing and chairing meetings.
The organisation is small, and the founders are seeking someone who will bring an understanding of employee ownership and who can help set up appropriate processes and practices. Supporting the Trust and new company board to establish well defined and collaborative relationships during the initial transition period will be vital, so strong inter-personal skills are necessary.

Experience of working at a strategic leadership level, ideally at board level is essential. It would be desirable, although not essential, for applicants to have had experience of working in a small business and a background of working in a construction, design or building services environment.

With four meetings per year, either in person or online, and the associated preparation and contact with the Founder and Managing Director, this Independent Trustee Chair will have the opportunity to help shape working relationships and build board effectiveness.

This small organisation prides itself on being very collaborative and inclusive, preferring straight conversations and team efforts. It is therefore vital for any candidates interested in this role to be values driven, practical, pragmatic and possess a good sense of humour.  It will be important for any candidate to be able to demonstrate their understanding of what the role requires and how they would apply themselves.

It is the organisation’s preference that any potential candidate has:

  • An ability to work well as part of a small and diverse team of trustees.
  • Excellent communication skills with an instinct to listen first, the confidence to challenge supportively and the interpersonal skills to support and develop an effective Trust Board.
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities of trustees and clarity on the difference between governance functions and management functions.
  • A willingness to demonstrate commitment to the company, and their long term vision, mission and values.

Salary - £10k - £12k
Term of office – Initially 3 years
