The Organisation:

Our client is JDP.  They are a building services engineering consultancy that successfully combines a practical approach to M&E engineering solutions with a collaborative attitude to working in a project team, in a way that considers our impact upon the wider environment and community in which we work.

JDP was founded in 1972 and has developed as a customer-focused practice.  We have controlled growth at a sustainable level whereby we can provide our client, of whatever size, with a personal service.  This approach has resulted in long-term relationships with occupiers, investors and developers.  We work with our client to get the best out of their buildings, from the point of view of both the initial design and the on-going life of the building; to make sure that it will work for the users of the building.  It is our stated aim on all projects to ensure that we help our clients, through practical design and support, to deliver buildings that work efficiently.

On 30 June 2021, the shares of the business were transferred into a trust for the benefit of the employees of the company.

The Role:
The Independent Trustee Chair will have responsibility as a member of the Employee Ownership Trust Board to protect the interests of the beneficiaries in the business.  An Independent Trustee is sought with the expertise and commitment to Chair and support the further development of the Trust Board.

The organisation is small, and the Founder and Executive Team are seeking someone who will bring advice and guidance on all aspects of employee ownership. It would be helpful, although not essential, for applicants to be able to demonstrate knowledge/understanding of the opportunities and complexities of an employee-owned business and have a background in the built environment sector.

With a minimum of two meetings per year and the associated preparation and contact with the Executive Team, this Trustee Chair will have the opportunity to continue to shape working relationships and board effectiveness.

The organisation prides itself on providing the best service to clients delivering projects to the highest possible standards whilst being innovative in business solutions. It has worked hard to define values which are the best fit.  It is important for any candidates interested in this role to be highly values driven, offering examples of when behaviours and values have mattered. It will be important for any candidate to be able to demonstrate their understanding of what the role requires and how they would apply themselves.

It would be the organisations preference that any potential candidate has:

  • An ability to work well as part of a team of trustees.
  • Excellent communication skills with an instinct to listen first, the confidence to challenge supportively and the interpersonal skills to continue to develop an effective trustee board.
  •  An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities of trustees and clarity on the difference between governance functions and management functions
  • A passion for and commitment to JDP’s vision, mission and values
