The Organisation

Our client is a leading European waste management company. They urgently need an Interim Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ) Director to delivery on the strategy whilst they search for a permanent person.

The role will involve travel to another EU country at least once per month and other UK travel to their major sites. We expect this assignment to last for six months (commencing ideally by late Jan/first week of Feb ’22). 

Role & Responsibilities

Develop and agree strategic plans for SHEQ and related activities that develop the service to meet current and future needs of the business and ensure the organisation achieves world class levels of health, safety, environmental and sustainability performance.

Lead, support and coach the SHEQ team (5-6 in the UK) to support the UK contracts working closely and in partnership with operational Directors and Managers.

Guide, influence and co-ordinate group and divisional safety cultural initiatives with two key subsidiary businesses and four key European countries.

Drive safety cultural change, leadership initiatives and improvement across the division.

Co-ordinate sustainability reporting and manage the divisional input to group, monitoring against improvement plans.

Ensure SHEQ procedures and systems are implemented across the division, are fully understood by competent follow-up to allow all relevant UK legislation to be complied with.

Control expenditure of SHEQ budget. Overall responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and development of integrated ISO standards, accreditation and the Business Management System.

Ensure all SHEQ lessons learnt and other high value learning events are communicated across the business.

Represent the company at trade association (ESA) working groups, industry forums, H&S and Climate, and lobby government as required. 

The Desired Candidate

  • Significant SHEQ leadership experience with relevant degree or NEBOSH Diploma level in Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent environmental/sustainability/engineering qualification.
  • A background in one of the following industries: waste, construction, manufacturing/engineering, oil & gas, distribution
  • Demonstrable success in the development and implementation of SHEQ strategies.
  • Experience of partnering with and influencing geographically dispersed management teams. And effective multiple stakeholder management, preferably in a matrixed organisation structure.
  • Experience of delivering UK safety cultural transformation.
  • Previous knowledge of sustainability reporting, carbon analysis and data management.
  • Proficient in improving and embedding ISO Standards (45001, 14001 and 9001) with lead auditing experience.
  • Strong track record in delivering company-level change management initiatives.
  • First-hand experience of dealing with regulatory bodies stakeholders and external clients.
  • A highly capable communicator with the gravitas to influence across all levels.
  • Results focused and committed to achieving goals.
