The Organisation
Our client is a well-known player in building materials (notably rooflights) and in operation for over 30 years. They seek a Sales & Marketing Director to spearhead their new sales and marketing strategy, as they seek to expand their product offering from where they are today. This position will be a key leadership role in the company, reporting directly to the MD, and a central part of their future growth journey. They are a mid-sized company with operations in Surrey and Scotland.
Roles & Responsibilities
This is an entrepreneurial role, where you will have the opportunity to shape the sales and marketing strategy. We are seeking a charismatic, energetic leader for our sales and marketing team, who leads through example and engenders trust and confidence in their approach. In this role, you will have the opportunity to optimise the current sales and marketing approach, a central component of which, will be the development of a new sales opportunity tracking and forecast platform.
As a strategic thinker, implementing rigour will be second nature to you, where you will be familiar with setting clear goals and objectives for your team, ensuring they are relentlessly pursued, with regular touch points to update on progress. Commercially astute, you will be able to balance the quest for revenue, with the need for profitable orders, where your previous experience of managing a full P&L will ensure cost discipline, and alignment with resources in the most profitable areas.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Overall accountability for sales and marketing activities
- Responsible for meeting and exceeding revenue and profitability targets for the business
- Lead the existing Sales Manager, two Areas Managers and Internal Sales Leader - 3 direct reports, with a further 7+ indirect reports
- Maximise the effectiveness of the sales and marketing team structure, creating an appropriate balance of time spent with new and existing customers, by engendering a culture of face to face customer contact time
- Segment the sales and marketing strategy to include supply only and project based sales
- Establish and maintain relationships with key clients across the UK, including architects, contractors and other industry specific stakeholders
- Drive sales enablement initiatives across the business, creating a robust pipeline of opportunities for the business, correctly managed and segmented in the company’s CRM system to aid forecasting
- Prepare forecasts for the board on new and existing sales activities, including a KPI dashboard, shared weekly with the board
The Desired Candidate
- Ideally degree qualified
- 10 years’ experience in a similar commercial function and 5+ years’ experience of managing and motivating teams, ideally commercially and operationally based (We are not just looking for candidates in "building materials" but wider into areas including construction, project management, housing, infrastructure, engineering and property)
- Demonstrable sales and/or commercial background – able to develop relationships at multiple levels
- Financially astute, with the ability to assess opportunities (risks/reward), and where/how best to align resources and capabilities for maximum effect
- Evidence of taking a fledging business, then scaling revenue significantly, both in revenue and profitability
