Tackling racial stereotypes: 56 Black Men

Considering their notable contributions to the British workforce and economy, people of African and Caribbean heritage (Black people) in our community are underrepresented in most UK organisations.  Even within Russam’s talent pools the percentages of black interim and permanent professionals are small, and we are actively looking at ways to change this.

Two years ago we reached out to Jon Daniel, an award-winning creative director who designed the AfroSupa heroes http://www.jon-daniel.com/. Jon put us in touch with the excellent Rob Neil OBE who at the time was leading the MOJ’s Project Race.

Very sadly, Jon Daniel suddenly became ill and died of pneumonia in 2017, but his encouragement helped us to talk more confidently about race. He reassured us that we shouldn’t be afraid of saying the wrong thing – action is always better than doing nothing, even if you make mistakes. This has become a fundamental principle of how we now do business.

We noticed Cephas Williams 56 Black Men campaign and was compelled to find out more – could we in some way support him?  We invited Cephas to talk to our NED community with Winmark and talked with him in depth.  Our interview covers the value of diversity, the challenge facing black men in society, his own personal journey and more.

Look at these short snippets, and when you have time, do watch the full interview here – it is fascinating.
