The business of defence technology

Seeking out the right Chief Technology Officer for a fast growing defence company.

Our client, Radio Physics Solutions, is a fast-growing company specialising in technology that protects against concealed threats such as explosives and weapons.

Russam was tasked with finding a Chief Technology Officer. As we would expect from a young company, the brief was broad and complex.

The ideal candidate needed to have worked in the field of radar technology within a commercial setting. Not only would they lead engineering teams, but the role also required customer facing expertise, competitive analysis and partner management. Ideally they would also hold a PhD.

Our research strategy involved a search across three key areas: the UK Science and Technology Parks, any company building products with a radar component – regardless of application – and consultancies with defence teams.

Our initial identification of possible candidates led us to 220 people. Through emails and social media we were able to bring 20 qualified candidates to the table. Meeting them was a stimulating experience and a great opportunity to learn from the scientific community about their achievements. As a result we were able to successfully place an exceptional professional.

Dr Stephen Clark completed his PhD at Sydney University in 1998, focused on autonomous land vehicle navigation using millimetre wave radar. He co-founded navigational company Navtech in 1999. His skills include digital signal processing, embedded systems, real time operating systems and radar algorithm development.

Stephen was delighted to accept the role of CTO with Radio Physics Solutions and is embracing the challenge.
